DSP Recognition Week took place Sept. 9-15, so for this spotlight, we are featuring Direct Support Professional Thu Reed. Thus far, the employees for the spotlight articles have been chosen at random, but in honor of this special occasion and in recognition of her hard work and commitment, Thu was nominated by Jennifer Biggs, Director of Community Services. Congratulations Thu! And thank you to all of those who have dedicated themselves to a direct support career.
Q: Where are you from? What area of Colorado are you in now?
A: I was born and raised in Northern California. I currently reside in Colorado Springs
Q: What is your color, based on the Colors training?
A: Based on the Colors Training I was tied with Blue and Green.
Q: Tell us about yourself in a nutshell.
A: My name is Thu (pronounced like the number two)
I was raised in Northern California where I received my bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation at California State University- Chico State. I met my husband in Richmond, CA and we have a 5-year-old daughter name, Gabriella. I enjoy cooking and watching romantic comedy. I spend most of my time at a local park or anything outdoors with my daughter and husband. I find it fun grocery shopping and solving brain games such as Sudoku. I am the worst at understanding and getting jokes. My coworkers think it’s hilarious I don’t understand jokes when we share them every Wednesdays during our Team Meeting. My favorite food is Banh Xeo ( Vietnamese crepes).
Q: How long have you been at Overture?
A: September 26 marked two years at Overture
Q: What is your role at Overture and how would you describe what you do?
A: My role at Overture is Direct Support Professional. I would describe my role as an advocate and someone who promotes independence to the participants I currently served. Some of the things I currently do is run a cooking class, teach daily living skills, how to advocate for oneself, plan community outings, and building relationships within the community.
Q: What do you most enjoy about your workday?
A: I learn something new from the participants every day but, also how I teach them something new and have new experiences that’s why this job never gets old
Q: If you were a superhero, what would your powers be?
Q: Name one thing on your bucket list.
Q: If you were trapped on a deserted island and could only bring one thing, what would it be?
A: I would bring a Boat with a full tank of gas 😊 so I can leave the deserted island asap. AHAHAHAHA
